Overview

Longkang Kotagede is more than just a cafe; it is an experience nestled deep within the charming alleys of Kotagede, Yogyakarta. Located at Kampung Alun Alun KG III, this art cafe perfectly blends vintage aesthetics with a warm, homely atmosphere that invites visitors to pause and savor both food and surroundings.

The space evokes a peaceful retreat—featuring a cozy 'living room' that opens onto a lush green garden, creating a serene environment ideal for relaxation. The subtle sounds of birdsong add to the ambiance, making it a perfect spot to cool down after exploring the nearby historic "Between Two Gates" area. Those seeking a quiet moment with a good book will appreciate the thoughtful library corner, where books can be borrowed freely, enhancing the cultural and intellectual vibe of the place.

Longkang’s menu strikes a balance between simplicity and authenticity. Highlights include the nasi bistik kambing, renowned for its tender, flavorful meat with a nuanced sweet and spicy profile, customizable with extra chili upon request. Traditional snacks such as singkong goreng and pisang caramel delight the palate, while beverages like the iced Longkang coffee and refreshing Green Tamarin juice provide a perfect complement to the tropical setting. The drinks not only refresh but offer health benefits, such as immune-boosting qualities, reflecting the cafe’s mindful approach to well-being.

Getting to Longkang requires a small adventurous detour through a narrow alley marked by a distinctive gate or “gapura.” Motorcyclists should park near the historic royal cemetery, as vehicle access is limited, reinforcing the cafe’s intimate, tucked-away charm. The staff, including kak Lani and kak Eugene, add to the welcoming atmosphere with their friendly service and hospitality.

Longkang Kotagede attracts a diverse crowd—from locals craving nostalgic flavors and tourists seeking an authentic cultural experience to art and coffee enthusiasts who appreciate carefully crafted drinks in a vintage setting. Its appeal is as much about the unique location and tranquil ambiance as it is about the thoughtfully prepared menu.

In summary, Longkang Kotagede is a must-visit for anyone in Yogyakarta wanting to immerse themselves in the area's rich heritage while enjoying comforting food and excellent coffee within an artfully designed space.

An aesthetic & vintage cafe in a narrow alley in Kotagede. To get to this place, make sure you have to find this "gapura" (see pic), then follow the road (about 2mins). If you ride motorcycle, park at "makam raja mataram" cause motorcyle is not allowed. We ordered: Iced longkang coffe Hot americano Singkong goreng Pisang caramel *Forgot the price but we spent 77k The food & drinks were so good and tasty.. Must-visit place if you go to Kotagede

Longkang offers the typical Jogja's vintage ambiance, a shade during the hot days plus simple food. After walking around Kotagede during a hot sunny day, I found Longkang is the perfect place to cool myself. There was a 'living room' adjacent to the green garden where I sat in while enjoying iced chocolate and cireng.

I absolutely loved my time at Longkang. The location is calm and peaceful—tucked away from the noise, with just the right touch of background music that doesn’t overpower your convo. There are two seating areas, and I chose the one near the bookshelf, which gave it a cozy and homely vibe. I stayed for quite a while and was even accompanied by Mas Boy, the resident cat—so friendly, adorable, and photogenic of course! The food is an interesting twist on Indonesian comfort dishes. I had the "nasi kemangi" while my sibling ordered "nasi gila". Unlike typical Jogja meals that lean sweet, the flavors here are more on the salty-savory side, but still very balanced. If you're into spicy food, it might not be hot enough, but I suspect they’re adjusting to local preferences. You might asked them to set your food on "super spicy". As for getting there, the location on Google Maps is accurate. However, the owner intentionally didn’t put up signage—so you’ll probably need to ask around, which actually encourages interaction with the locals (which I loved!). Definitely a place I’d recommend for a quiet escape, good food, books, and cat cuddles.
